Middle School Information Sheet

We would like to welcome you and your child to the physical education program at the Middle School.  Our goal is for each child to recognize the benefits of regular physical activity, demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior and understand that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self expression and communication. Throughout the course of the year, students will be introduced to a variety of individual and team sports, adventure and challenge activities and fitness assessments.

Student Expectations

At the middle school level, there are several guidelines that we ask our students to follow in order to provide the highest quality physical education program.  These include: coming to class prepared in proper attire, demonstrating good listening skills, following all directions, showing sincere effort and displaying respect for each other and the teacher.

Proper Attire

In order to participate safely in physical education class, it is imperative that students come to class prepared with the proper attire.  Rubber-soled sneakers that are properly laced or secured with velcro and loose fitting clothing that allows for movement are appropriate.  Skirts, dresses, cleats, boots, heeled shoes or slip-ons are not acceptable.  Additionally, all jewelry that may be easily lost, broken or can cause injury should not be worn during physical education class.

Grading Policy

At the Middle School, student grades will be based on participation and preparation, personal and social skills and assessments. Assessments evaluate a student’s knowledge and understanding of the content of each unit and may be written, oral or skill-based. In some cases, an individual or group project may be assigned.  Should you have any questions about your child’s grade, please do not hesitate to call his or her physical education teacher.

Medical Excuses

In the event that your child is unable to participate in physical education class for a medical reason, a written note from a parent/guardian is required. However, if your child needs to be excused for more than one day, a doctor’s note is required. In this case, a note from the doctor allowing your child to return to physical education class is also required.

PARENTS…

While we aim to provide your child with the means and the knowledge to achieve a healthy lifestyle, you are the most influential component to your child becoming a healthy individual for his/her lifetime. As a family, try to plan active family outings or set aside time as a family to do something active everyday! Your encouragement and support as always is appreciated.
